Edible Species

Wildcrafting Video

If you are from Colorado and want to learn to identify edible mushrooms in the mountains, let me know, I might arrange a group hike next August if everything is still going well.
This video is about wildcrafting and learning about the native edible species of plants in your area. You can get to know these plants and and start trying to selectively grow them. Make sure you are 100% sure the plant is edible before you eat it. You may even try to start planting regular leafy green vegetables around your area and see if they acclimate. Any source of food is better than none, think of it as insurance.

I'm amazed that if ...
I'm amazed that if you turn (disturb) the soil that many "wild" edibles? just come up that spring. I turned a small plot to put in Jerusalem artichokes and had common mallow, lambsquarters, chickweed, curly dock, dandelions, and some latuca species come in all on their own. I wish I had made a video of this. All of these plants out completed the surrounding grass. Amazing.

Hey! Thanks for ...
Hey! Thanks for your comment, I am subbed to you as well. LOL.. You know, I've unintentionally planted mustard greens and radishes all? over my property and have herbs everywhere. It is quite awesome, having let most of those go to seed last year, they just deposited themselves as they saw fit. Do you ever do watercress? I'm sketchy with those.. Their persistent presence is a testament to their life giving qualities I think. Burdock esp. so, it is quite the plant! And very tasty I think.

Thanks for the ...
Thanks for the video. Green Deane just inspired me to search for Elm trees, too. I just planted some burdock to self perpetuate, and? have been feralcrafting such plants for a few years now. Nettles, plantain, dandelion, salsify, calendula, cleavers. I love how eager these plants are to grow, and how much amazingness they give in return.

I think if I could ...
I think if I could find some, one of the very best wild foods is Stinging nettles. Even if I could cultivate some in a wild area and let them propagate near a stream and then go and harvest them that would be great! The trees in my yard, Siberian Elm also have edible bark and leaves. It is very interesting, Mushroom hunting is? loads of fun if you've never done it!

Well, it has been ...
Well, it has been winter since I made this video!!! I posted it in December, so even if I had wanted to I couldn't wildcraft in my area, everything is DEAD! LOL.. I have tried to germinate some seeds of wild currants I found unsuccessfully, I may have to scarify them first, already froze them. I? have just started dabbling in it, but as I mention in the vid, I'm a fan of Burdock root, I also like Boletus, but I may pick some usnea lichen for a tincture, horsetail for tea and water, catnip etc.

How's the ...
How's the wildcrafting been going since you created this video? I struck up a conversation at the local farmer's market late last year with a wildcrafter named Will Endres. Introduced me to the plants he thought were most useful medicinally. He was both a wildcrafter domesticating the herbs into his garden and? also a tracker of the plants. It was very interesting. Which plants have you personally found most useful and successful? Have you been able to bring any into a gardening area?

Cool info on the ' ...
Cool info on the 'shrooms - would love to see a video on collecting them, and especially details on identifying them. (Hmmm, always thought the ones that had "blue streaks" were, um, "ceremonial" - if you get my drift?) Re; Acne - The BEST remedy I ever used is a fresh cut lemon! Dab a? slice on the effected areas after you wash for bed and watch them disappear (or nearly) overnight! If it stings, splash on cool water after a bit. The combination of acid and vitamin C works wonders.

You seem to know so ...
You seem to know so much about plants, I thought I'd ask... I have 2 apple trees in my backyard that produced an abundance of apples our first two years of living here but produced absolutely nothing last year. But just down the street neighbors with the same type of apple? tree had a very good harvest. So I wouldn't assume that it's weather or condition related. It's very bizarre. Of course, maybe there's a simple explanation?

I don't think so, do they have a somewhat slimy button top? These ones don't turn blue right away, it takes a? while for them to turn, by the end of the drying process they look black if anything.

By any chance was that blue stainer Gyroporus Cyanescens. We have them in? abondance here in Michigan. The only problem with them is it's hard to get the sand out of them.

I'd like to see a sauerkraut vid. I made some kraut this year;? it was edible, but not as good as store-bought, which to me means something must have gone wrong. I've got burdocks all over my yard too. Wonder if I could sell 'em...
